Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Monday, Nov. 30: At 9:58 pm an officer was dispatched to HyVee for a report of shoplifting having occurred earlier in the day. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, Nov. 29: At 2:48 an officer was dispatched to the intersection of Westwood Drive and S. Grimmell Rd for a report of a male in a running vehicle stopped on the travelled portion of the roadway. It was advised the male appeared to be unconscious at the wheel. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Dale Lee Spaulding, 52, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated*.
Saturday, Nov. 28: At 2:17 am a complainant reported the theft of two archery targets from his yard. The officer is investigating. At 9:01 am a complainant reported an abandoned bicycle at 1000 W. Adams St. The officer transported the bike to the impound lot and secured it.
Friday, Nov. 27: At 3:52 am a complainant reported a theft. The officer is investigating. At 12:35 pm the Jefferson PD was advised of a fire alarm activation at Greene County High School. The officer determined the alarm was set off by dust from construction work occurring at the time. At 6:47 pm a resident reported seeing smoke at 608 N. Locust St. The officer responded and secured the scene until the Jefferson fire department arrived and extinguished a small fire in the garage.
Thursday, Nov. 26: At 3:42 pm a Jefferson officer was requested to assist the Greene County jailer with an unruly inmate. Two officers assisted the jailer until a Greene County deputy arrived
Wednesday, Nov. 25: At 4:44 am a Greene County deputy requested a Jefferson officer check several residences in Jefferson for a missing juvenile. The officer did so and passed on the collected information to the deputy.
Tuesday, Nov. 24: Routine activity reported.
Monday, Nov. 23: At 4:20 pm officers investigated an accident in the parking lot at HyVee. Linda Walker of Jefferson turned her 2016 Chevy Equinox too sharply in the lot and made contact with a parked 2016 Dodge Journey owned by David Trammell, also of Jefferson. Both vehicles had a reported $400 in damages. The accident occurred on private property outside of the roadway, so no citation was issued.
Sunday, Nov. 22: At 12:05 an security staff at Wild Rose Casino requested an officer. The officer learned a male patron had been asked to leave the gaming floor after being denied purchasing more alcohol. The male had gone outside and was in a vehicle with a female. Staff was concerned for the female. The officer spoke to the female who advised she did not want the male in her vehicle. The officer had the male exit the vehicle and the female was allowed to leave the area. The male waited outside until friends came and took him home. At 1:51 am a caller advised the same dog that was reported as barking in the 300 block of S. Elm Saturday evening was still barking. Larissa Bushman was cited for barking dog- annoyance.
Saturday, Nov. 21: At 2:34 am an officer performed a traffic stop after witnessing the driver driving on the wrong side of the street. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Larry Jon Hovick, 45, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated– second offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 6:38 pm a caller advised of a barking dog in the 300 block of S. Elm St. The officer located the animal but no one was home at the residence.
Friday, Nov. 20: Routine activity reported.
Thursday, Nov. 19: At 2:27 am an officer performed a traffic stop on a speeding driver in the 1600 block of Highway 30. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Douglas Wayne Shutt, 59, of Grand Junction for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor) and driving while license barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. He was also cited for excessive speed. At 11:46 am officers investigated an accident at N. Mulberry St and Highway 30. Richard Moore of Dexter was operating a 2006 Mack dump truck owned by Caliber Concrete of Audubon. He stopped at the posted stop sign. As he began to leave the stop sign, he stopped again for oncoming traffic. Yerson Salvin of Jefferson was following Moore. He struck the rear of the dump truck when Moore stopped. The dump truck was not damaged, the 2006 Chevrolet K1500 Salvin was driving, which is owned by Amy Baugh of Jefferson, sustained an estimated $2,000 in front end damage. Salvin was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance ahead.
Wednesday, Nov. 18: At 5:11 am several callers advised of fireworks going off near the former Greene County middle school. The officer located used fireworks at E. Russell and S. Locust Sts, but no one was located in the area. At 11:52 pm while speaking to occupants of a vehicle parked at Sparky’s One-Stop, the officer smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver admitted to possessing marijuana in the vehicle. During a probable cause search, the officer also located a glass smoking device. The items were seized for testing. Charges are pending lab results.
Tuesday, Nov. 17: At 3:53 pm staff at HyVee reported a vehicle parked in the store lot was leaking fuel on the ground. The officer arrived and made contact with the vehicle’s owner and it was removed from the lot. The Jefferson fire department responded and cleaned up the spill.
Monday, Nov. 16: *****Coverage provided by the Sheriff’s Office overnight until 6 am. At 8:38 am a complainant reported the theft of a Hoverboard overnight from a residence in the 500 block of S. Olive St. The board was valued at $200 and had been left outside. At 11:13 am a complainant reported numerous people at Wild Rose Casino were not wearing face masks. The officer advised the mandate is not enforceable at the county level and took no action. At 12:56 pm an officer responded to a backing accident in the 500 block of S. Elm St. Ashley Lorentzen of Jefferson backed her 2014 Ford Edge from a private drive and struck a southbound 1994 Chevrolet C3500 pickup truck driven by Gary Grundon of Grand Junction and owned by Robert Thorp, also of Jefferson. Lorentzen was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Thorp’s vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 5:10 pm a complainant reported an injured deer in the roadway near S. Elm St and Ram Drive. The officer dispatched the animal and removed it from the roadway. At 9:14 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino requested a welfare check on a male who had fallen on concrete while leaving the casino and received minor injuries. He had sat in his vehicle for several minutes and was possibly intoxicated. The officer made contact with the subject in his vehicle. The officer provided some minor first aid to the subject and requested he not drive away from the area, as the officer noticed some signs of impairment during the interaction. The officer provided the male a ride to a local Hotel for the remainder of the evening.

Wednesday, Nov. 11: At 8:56 am a complainant reported the theft of his semi and trailer from 600 N. Elm St. The 2012 Peterbilt 9T and trailer were parked at the location at 9 pm on 11/10, and found missing this morning. The vehicle has been entered into NCIC as a stolen motor vehicle.
Tuesday, Nov. 10: Routine activity reported.
Nov. 9: *****An officer finished an investigation that began on 11/03 at 1050 hours. A caller had called advising a driver was chasing her on Highway 30, heading into Jefferson, and had attempted to force her off of the road. The officer has requested arrest warrants for Cole William Golay, 28, of Glidden for harassment- third degree, criminal mischief- fifth degree, and reckless driving, all simple misdemeanors*.
Sunday, Nov. 8: At 1:34 pm a caller advised of a brush pile fire near the 200 block of Briarwood Bend that was not being supervised and was out of control. Jefferson Fire was dispatched to the scene. A Jefferson public works employee was requested to bring the city’s end loader to assist in gaining control of the fire. Several houses were endangered by the flying embers from the fire, due to the extreme winds. Officers learned a male subject had started the fire in the brush pile, which was actually located at 1506 Westwood Drive. The officer has requested an arrest warrant for Karl Maurice Krieger, 27, of Jefferson for reckless use of fire (serious misdemeanor)*.
Saturday, Nov 7: At 4:34 am staff at HyVee requested an officer for a male refusing to leave the business. The officer met with the male, who advised he did not feel well and wanted to go to the hospital. The officer transported the male to the Greene County Medical Center ER. At 6:04 am medical center ER staff requested the officer to return there for the male in the previous entry. The male refused treatment but would not leave the facility. A Greene County deputy transported the male to the Webster County line, as he was trying to get to Fort Dodge. At 2:02 pm staff at HyVee Fast & Fresh reported a female had pumped $15 in fuel into her vehicle. She entered the store and attempted to pay for the purchase with an obviously forged check. The store clerk refused to accept the check. She left and was supposed to return to pay for the fuel, but did not. The store provided her ID and a plate on her vehicle to the officer. The officer is investigating.
Friday, Nov. 6: At 10 am officers located a gas can in the roadway in the 400 block of S. Elm St. The gas can be claimed at the LEC by the owner. At 12:15 pm a resident reported his brother had given a juvenile female a ride to an address in Waukee. He later learned the female was entered as a missing juvenile. The officer forwarded the information and address the female was dropped off at to Waukee PD. At 4:55 pm security staff at Wild Rose Casino reported finding a man’s wallet on the gaming floor. The wallet contained an Iowa ID and possible narcotics. The officer took possession of the wallet and is investigating.
Thursday, Nov. 5: At 1:38 am an officer performed a traffic stop with a speeding driver at Highways 30 and 4. As the officer sat in his vehicle running the female subject’s driving privileges through NCIC, the female left the scene. The officer began pursuing the fleeing driver. The chase went northbound on Highway 4 and reached speeds faster than 100 mph. The chase continued west on Highway 4 to Churdan. The driver came to a stop on S. Head St in Churdan. The officer arrested Angel Marie Vaughn, 38, of Marshalltown for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor), eluding/OWI (Class D felony), possession of marijuana (serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. She was also cited for excessive speed 110 in a 55 mph zone, fail to obey stop sign, fail to provide proof of financial liability, and open container- driver. At 2 pm a complainant reported the theft of $125 cash from The Gardens. A suspect’s name was provided to the officer and the investigation is ongoing.
Wednesday, Nov. 4: Routine activity reported.
Tuesday, Nov. 3: At 9:50 am a complainant reported a child walking in the street near N. Locust and E. Reed Sts. The officer located the child at her residence and spoke to the caregiver present. The officer forwarded the information to DHS, as there is a current open assessment on the child. At 10 am the Perry PD advised officers of a Jefferson male for whom there were outstanding Perry PD arrest warrants. The officers subsequently arrested Sebastian Ross Ramirez, 22, of Jefferson. The three arrest warrants are narcotic related. At 10:52 am a complainant called the LEC and advised a driver was following her on Highway 30 as she approached Jefferson. She advised the other driver was trying to force her off the road. The officer located the described vehicle and performed a traffic stop at Casey’s General Store. The officer is speaking with all parties involved and trying to determine what occurred.
Monday, Nov. 2: At 11:10 am staff at A&W reported a vehicle had been parked in the lot there for several days. The officer is working to contact the vehicle’s owner to have it removed. At 6:14 pm a caller advised of a pregnant female using narcotics at a Jefferson residence. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, Nov. 1: At 8:16 am a complainant spoke to an officer about concerns for her neighbor. She believed he was having a mental breakdown. An officer and a deputy coaxed the male to ER to be evaluated by a medical doctor. The subject broke free from the officers and ran out of the facility. A deputy received non-threatening injuries during a struggle between the male and officers. After being cleared by a doctor, the officer arrested Steven Logan Dzuris, 32, of Jefferson for interference with official act/bodily injury (serious misdemeanor)*. At 11:45 am a complainant reported the theft of political signs from her yard in the 600 block of S. Olive St. At 11:55 am a complainant reported the theft of a Blue Lives Matter sign from her yard in the 600 block of S. Olive St. At 6:01 pm a complainant advised a neighbor had parked a vehicle on her property in the 300 block of N. Oak St, and that the neighbor’s dog regularly defecates on her property. The officer is working to make contact with the neighbor to end the issues. At 9:46 pm an officer was requested at Wild Rose Casino for a female, who was impaired by narcotics, attempting to leave in a vehicle. The officer made contact with the female and attempted to get a family member to come and get the female. After failing to locate someone willing to come and get her, a Greene County deputy took the female to the county line, where a Calhoun county deputy transported her to her residence.
